Looking for a traditional authentic Polish cuisine or a new restaurant to try different from the norm? Bacowka Restaurant in Roselle, IL could be what you’re looking for. It is located in a large strip mall with ample parking. Inside the restaurant, it did take a few minutes before a staff member spotted us. The waitress seated us in a solid wooden table with chairs. The inside had a winter lodge feeling with stuffed animal trophies and plenty of TV’s for sports fans.
Before our meals arrived the waitress gave us warm bread, lard/spice mixture and two pickles. We ordered the Zbojnicka Micha (a sample platter of three pierogis, one cabbage roll, one polish sausage, two potato pancakes, mashed potatoes and braised cabbage) and the Tradycyjny Schaboszczak (traditional breaded pork chops served with potatoes and mixed salad). The potato pancakes had a crispy texture with onion, garlic and flour. It was full of flavor. The pierogi’s were stuffed with meat of your choosing and the dumpling skin felt firm. The stuffed cabbage was wrapped around seasoned meat. The breaded pork chops were crispy, juicy and flavorful. The potatoes were simply seasoned but tasty. The one downside is that there were not many vegetarian/vegan items. Vegetarians and vegans may have a difficult time if they don’t stick with the potato pancakes or soup.
Overall, the food was delicious and price reasonable. Even though waiting to be seated took longer than expected, the service after was fast and efficient. Drinks were refilled in a timely manner and the waitress was extremely friendly. The food comes in large portion sizes and a great way to experience the Polish culture!
